There has been a preponderance of men this year waiting to ask a girl on a date until February 29th, a leap year event that occurs every four years. The trend began four years ago with a random post on Twitter that went viral. The anonymous user had been waiting almost four years to ask a girl he liked out on a date until Leap Day so that he would not have to celebrate nor purchase presents every year.

As the post went viral, over 877,000 men had discussed the idea and it was unanimously voted as the best dating idea of the year. Men could skip yet another Hallmark moment where they were obligated to buy a card, chocolates, flowers, and take the girl out for a nice meal. The savings over the years was estimated to be well worth the wait.

Restaurants across the country have seen a huge uptick in the number of reservations for Leap Day, outpacing even Valentines Day of this year. Most of the restaurants had no idea of this new viral phenomenon and were unprepared for the coming onslaught of couples.

Someone at Hallmark had seen the post on Twitter and came up with a brilliant idea. They developed a special card for Leap Day that said “I have waited four years to ask you out!” It was an immediate best seller.

Our staff of many spent weeks tracking down the original Twitter user from four years ago to ask how the date had gone. Unfortunately the man had forgotten that the girl he was keen on was going out of town that day for a business trip. However, he plans on asking her out again this year on the same day.
